Saying yes to the Dress!

Almost every bride can’t wait to find “the one” perfect dress, sometimes it only takes a couple dresses in while other times it can take a few shops and many glasses of champagne later. Here are some tips to help when find that perfect dress.

1. B-U-D-G-E-T

While we don’t always like that word or want to follow the budget, it definitely plays a crucial role when shopping for wedding dresses. There is no faster way to turn the appointment from smiles to tears when finding a $15K dress that is far out of the budget. And once you fall in love with that perfect dress it is hard to step back and not compare it to every other dress you will try on after that is in your budget.

Tip: Don’t forget to budget for alternations and accessories which can easily add another $1K+

2. Make appointments

Most salons want you to book an appointment in advance, it usually is a requirement now at boutique bridal shops. Start by calling your top 3 to set up an appointment, let them know how many will coming with you and if they offer private rooms for your party. Ask if they provide champagne and if they don’t if you are able to bring that into the store. The next best step is to ask if you can email them some examples of what dresses you are thinking with your budget so they can have dresses already pulled for you when you get there, but don’t worry you still get to shop around the store!

Tip: Spanx Spanx Spanx, most bridal shops have those to try on with your dress but why not bring your own that your will wear on your wedding day!

3. Time is of the essence

Most gowns are made overseas so between the production and shipping it can take up to 6-8 months if it’s a custom dress(remember in Asia they take a full month of for Chinese New Year!). Plus you have to factory in alternations once the dress arrives, so the more time the better.

Tip: If you are on a time crunch look to see if any bridal boutiques are having any sample sales, you can walk out the door that day with the dress of dreams

4. Traveling with your dress

When it comes to destination weddings you are most likely hopping on a plane to your destination. Most airlines will let you bring your dress on the plane (not even as your second piece of luggage), they will store your dress in the closet by the front of the cabin. Even better, once they see your wedding dress be prepared to get some complimentary champagne on the plane and maybe even a congratulatory announcement on the speaker from the captain. Destination weddings can be stressful when it comes to traveling but airlines are pretty good with making sure everything goes smoothly as soon as you check in.

Tip: Make sure your dress garment bag is waterproof, if not definitely purchase one! Don’t forget that custom Mrs. hanger too.

5. Who says you can only wear it once…

If you don’t plan on donating your gown why not have some fun! Many destination couples have a “trash the dress” photo session the day after the wedding. This is great because it’s just the  newlywed couple + photographer so you don’t have an audience and can feel so relaxed. Jump in the beach, lay on the sand and get those relaxed (sometimes steamy) photos. Just rinse your dress after you jump in the ocean to get the sand off and when you get back take it to a cleaners to help clean & preserve your dress.

Happy Shopping!
