covid + travel + weddings

While we all wish we could predict the future, there are still so many unknowns with COVID and 2020 (even 2021!). COVID has tremendously affected everyone around the world and a big impact on weddings and travel.  Imagine all the couples who were planning for over a year and all of sudden have to make a decision (and a quick one!) on how they would like to proceed… cancel or postpone?

Destination weddings got hit even harder, with all the travel restrictions and each country enforcing their own it has been a challenging time for everyone. Down here in Mexico we were about a month behind the US so it made it a little easier to know what the next step would be for any couples who have weddings in early 2020 but they were also a lot stricter than say the US and Canada.

1.       Postpone if possible, but we understand if you have to cancel

We as planners want to always make sure no matter what you decide, you still get the day you have dreamt of – while this day may look a little different, you should have no regrets. Now that it’s summer I always tell my couples, if your guests are comfortable traveling now (with cases still out there) than you should keep your Fall 2020 date. I say that sparingly because if there are any guests that you don’t think would be comfortable traveling and you would sorely miss on your day than you should consider postponing.  For those couples who have weighed all options and decide to cancel, regardless where you choose to have your wedding (courthouse, elopement. etc) you are marrying the love of your life and that is all that matters!

2 . Talk to your Venue & Vendors

If you decide to postpone you will want to contact your Venue ASAP with a new potential date but make sure you are flexible with new dates, remember there are so many other couples now postponing their weddings too. From there work with each Vendor to see if dates work for everyone. Go back to your contracts to find any information on postponement policies – luckily (most) vendors have been working together hard to make sure the couples aren’t paying the price for COVID.  This is why wedding planners are so important, they can re-schdedule/update contracts for you so it is one less thing you stress about.

3  . Talk to your guests

If you’ve postponed your wedding, make sure to send out a change-the-date card to all your guests.  There are some really fun COVID Postponement Cards out there to send, this will get guests to smile while times are tough. Remember planning a destination wedding means all the guests have most likely booked their airfare and hotels prior so they have to change all their travel plans.  Follow up with your family members and friends whether it’s via text, phone call or email to make sure they are aware of the new date, this adds a little personal touch as well!

4  . BREATHE!

Remember that this pandemic won’t last forever, we will all come out stronger than ever. If you can stay engaged through stay at home orders for over 3 months while planning your wedding, you can get through so much. Many years from now you will be laughing and talk about how you survived wedding planning through a pandemic!
